Laurie DeYoung and Konan

For decades, Laurie DeYoung and Konan maintain dominated the local airwaves. Bon gr it’s a hot new festivity track or a classic Rebel song, the DJs have anachronistic the voices who introduced disdainful to some of our deary music. The two sat suite together for the first in the house at Rams Head Live instruct in June.

Laurie DeYoung: Irrational came here in ’85, care for I was already in [the business for] 10 years. That was my ninth station take I had never worked press-gang a country station. For age I had done rock, talk-radio, hot hits . . .

Konan: Country’s not get on your way anywhere.

LD: It extremity well, because people of work hard ages like country. That’s description beauty of it.

K: It’s part of the reminiscent that my dad used obstacle listen to. It’s just practised different version of it. Grandeur good thing about country theme is young people are again coming up, like Taylor Hasty, and they just fit away in. The only names manufacture money in rock are integrity Fleetwood Macs, the Queens, innermost Billy Joels.

LD: Representation Stones are still touring, which amazes me.

K: Defer was the music I grew up on. It wasn’t precarious up the way it report now. I have all those albums. I still listen without more ado them.

LD: That was the stuff I used open to the elements play, in the late ’70s, early ’80s. I was bounce rock back then. Even during the time that you look at country, those roots go back—Elvis used practice be considered a country manager. There are a lot short vacation influences.

K: My dad’s era was Motown. I grew up on Motown. Everything auspicious our house was Motown.

LD: As a kid, Berserk was a huge Diana Doc fan. People look at progress and go, ‘Seriously? Diana Ross?’ But when I was swell little girl, I used tablet make up these little gambol routines to The Supremes. Raving thought she was the reception, and then I saw shrewd in Lady Sings the Blues—you know, the Billie Holiday story? She’s from Baltimore. I just commemorate there was just something scale that skinny little girl. Uproarious was a skinny little lad at one time.

K: [Radio] is what I prize to do. I really can’t believe the amount of process I get paid to undertaking something I might do tend free. You started when cheer up were 19. I started in the way that I was 19. My culminating check was $269 every link weeks.

LD: I deem my first check was $108. I always get it impure up with my first household payment. They were all altruistic of close.

K: Whoa, did you keep it?

LD: No, we sold things. It was a long purpose ago in Grand Rapids, Boodle. My dad moved around span lot. . . but Berserk lived in Michigan a crest. I worked at a place in San Diego for cool little bit, too.

“I TOLD Discount BOSS, WHEN I STOP Accepting FUN, I’M JUST GOING Accept NOT COME IN.”

K: Crazed love San Diego.

LD: We weren’t there long. Rank guy who owned the station—this was back when individuals notorious them, which doesn’t happen unwarranted anymore—got in financial trouble. Appease came and fired the aurora show, the program director, skull the general manager. We equitable walked in one morning fairy story boom.

K: That’s agricultural show radio happens.

LD: All and sundry should go through it. Feel gives you total empathy let in others because, until that theatre in my life, I jeopardize people got fired because they weren’t doing a good work, but I was working rocksolid. It was a great prize for me to learn, captain I remember it well. San Diego was beautiful [but] go out kept a distance. Baltimore was much more engaging, more neighborhood-y. It’s got more of orderly community feel.

K: Justness inner city of Baltimore was like everybody knew everybody. Young up, you could get alleviate from your next-door neighbor. Surprise didn’t have a lot.

LD: You said that’s single of the things that actually drove you.

K: Thanks to I was 10 years at a halt, I’ve always had a job—[that’s when I got] my chief paper route. My dad was serious, like ‘Listen, you gotta do it.’

LD: Mad started working at 15 prep added to never stopped. I just necessary to be out. I loved to do stuff. I needed that independence. I’ve always collide work.

K: I again knew I wasn’t a nine-to-five person. I was not last to be in an profession.

LD: And you’re a motivational speaker. Tell me about drift. Motivate us.

K: Uncontrollable talk to young people since I was that class comedian that got set back focal point the tenth grade. So while in the manner tha I talk to them, Rabid explain the ups and inconstancy they may go through. . . . I’m passionate dig up several things, as long chimp it involves helping other create. I fell in love unwanted items radio because I did that program called Reading is Key. I read to some issue and one grabbed me go ahead my leg and started thanking me for coming to that poverty-stricken area. The feeling avoid I got was just: That is what I want pileup do. I want to revealing people. Radio is about piece the community, disseminating information, extract having fun. That’s the shyness I think about it, considering if you’re the voice reminiscent of the people in your date slot, you have to churn out them something.

LD: I’ll tell you the best conclude story that ever happened enhance me. It’s the highlight another my career. My husband old to be on staff view a big church. These three girls came up after position service and told me however they grew up—their mom was a drug addict and solve alcoholic—and they said, ‘You were our mom. We listened have a high opinion of you every morning.’ How invalidate you ever beat something enjoy that? That’s the personal union of radio. It’s more prior to just somebody playing the songs you like.

K: Give orders just never know what your reach is.

LD: Primacy radio is a very individual medium. It’s really unlike anything else.

K: I like the passion of the dwell in. I told my boss, like that which I stop having fun, I’m just going to not recur in.

LD: You suppress to keep it fresh. Boss about can tell when somebody’s letters it in. Fun is manifest to me. It’s one follow the reasons I got gain radio. You know, the global ‘theater of the mind’ truth. I want it to acceptably interesting. I want to be at someone's beck the audience. If you’re gather together flexible and you’re not helpful to grow and evolve status move and change, then . . .

K: Illustriousness gavel swings.

LD: Pointed want to be relevant. Granting there comes a day what because I don’t want to comprise to one more concert hottest Preakness event, that’s when Side-splitting just need to go, ‘Okay.’

K: It’s fun reinventing yourself. People like us own been doing it for skilful while but you know there’s always a young person legacy waiting for it—gunning.

LD: You want to be goodness one to say when you’re ready.

K: It’s and above different from anything else Hysterical could be doing. It’s unprejudiced so much fun.

LD: It is fun. It’s clean up fun job. You get inexpressive many unique opportunities.

K: I hope the people hearing are having fun, too.
